SCU Trip F23

"The vision of a Church capable of radical inclusion, shared belonging, and deep hospitality according to the teachings of Jesus is at the heart of the synodal process: “Instead of behaving like gatekeepers trying to exclude others from the table, we need to do more to make sure that people know that everyone can find a place and a home here." We are called to go to every place, especially outside the more familiar territories, “leaving the comfortable position of those who give hospitality to allow ourselves to be welcomed into the existence of those who are our companions on the journey of humanity."
--"Enlarge The Space of The Tent:" Working Document for the Continental Stage, Synod 2021-2024, paragraph 31.

The Jesuit School of Theology welcomes you as we begin our Academic Year 2023-24. We hope that you found time this summer for renewal, for a reconnection with your communities and to prepare for the adventure that lies ahead here in Berkeley.

Over the past two weeks, the Student and Community Life Office has had the deep pleasure to host and celebrate our incoming cohort of scholars and ministers. These new members of our community come from 19 countries and from all over the USA. They are excited to participate with us as "our companions on the journey of humanity."

Today we send to you our first Magis newsletter of the new year. It contains information focused on our JST community, our upcoming programs, resources and initiatives. Beginning September 11th, our weekly Magis will include details about opportunities to engage communities "beyond our hill," at the GTU, at SCU and in the local community.

This is a living collaborative resource for and with our JST community. We hope it provides for you a space of engagement and participation.

Sincerely,
Jenny Girard Malley, MA
Assistant Dean, Student & Community Life

Communion under both Species - Reception of the Precious Blood:

At the end of last year, we recovered the practice of making communion available under both species. Those who wish to receive the Precious Blood should do so from the cup. In this regard, we follow the guidelines published by the Diocese of Oakland, which note that communicants may not self-intinct.

Important Updates from Student Life

Culture of Care

At SCU and JST there is no formal requirement to test for Covid upon your arrival this fall.  However, our JST community has embraced a Culture of Care by which each of us take responsibility for our own health and also the care of others.

There will be free Covid antigen tests available upon our arrival.  We invite you to take a test, administer it at home, and communicate with us should you test positive.  There will also be masks available for moments when we are in crowded spaces inside.  We invite everyone to be mindful and ready to care for one another so we can remain a healthy community space.    SCU also offers information about vaccination here

Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP)

We want to remind students that SCU requires everyone to have health insurance and that this is the time to accept the insurance or waive.  International Students on F-1 and J-1 visas are required to take SCU's SHIP.  Others, if covered by an appropriate insurance plan, can waive.  Please go to the SCU insurance website here  for general information.  To learn about particular coverage options please go here.

On August 17,  Students received an email from Tammy Oh, SCU Insurance Coordinator, which included information about how to opt into text message reminders.

Likewise, students are eligible to sign up for Tuition Protection Insurance. An investment in education today is substantial; usually the second largest investment to purchasing a home. In order to help protect your investment, Santa Clara University has partnered with A.W.G. Dewar, Inc., to provide protection from loss of funds paid toward tuition should a student need to completely withdraw from school for medical reasons. This is an extremely low-cost plan that could literally save you thousands of dollars!  Go here to get more information.  You must enroll in this insurance by the First Day of Classes, September 5.
