There are no African-American Saints formally recognized within the Catholic Church, but that could soon change. There are six incredible black men and women who are on the path to Canonization. The Catholic Church is starting to recognize their impact and may soon name any or all of them Saints. It's time to hear their stories.

Weaving Prayers of Peace | Co-Facilitated by Laryn Kovalik

Wednesday, Nov. 15 | 5:15 - 7:00 PM | Doug Adams Gallery (GTU Library)

Everyone is invited to come and be a part of a communal work of peace hosted by Creatives’ Cove, which is a student group that is supported by the Center for the Arts & Religion at the Graduate Theological Union. The work of peace is an ongoing process. Keeping this in mind, we are embarking on a collective journey. On November 15, students, faculty, staff, and anyone else that is affiliated with the GTU or one of its member schools are invited to come, gather, and prayerfully create strips that symbolize, that represent, that embody peace. You can use fabric, yarn, or whatever medium you desire. While we will be supplying some materials, we also invite you to bring your own yarn, fabric (old t-shirts, extra fabric, etc.), and anything else that can be crafted into strips to the event. In the Spring, we will weave these strips together. After that, we will invite communities to place the communal weaving in the sacred spaces of their respective communities and continue to pray for peace. That way this woven prayer for peace will travel and be engaged with people within and beyond the Creatives’ Cove.

Digital Humanity?: Artificial Intelligence, Spirituality, and the Art of Human Connection | Grad Student Conference

Boisi Center for Religion and American Public Life at Boston College

Submissions Due: January 12th, 2024

Questions about what it means to forge, foster, and maintain authentic relationships are becoming increasingly fraught in our age of rapid technological development. While advances in artificial intelligence are destabilizing classical conceptions of technology, humanity, spirituality, and relationality, people of virtually every historical era and tradition have engaged with these broad categories. In the age of AI, ChatGPT, Instagram, TikTok, Tinder, Google and many others, this conference invites participants to draw on intellectual resources from various fields to engage in questions around what it means to relate to one another, oneself, and the broader world, and to envision what the call to relationship requires amidst advances in artificial intelligence and other technological innovations.

As an interdisciplinary conference, we welcome proposals from graduate and professional students in any discipline, including theology, ethics, philosophy, religious studies, political science, law, technology studies, anthropology, sociology, the digital humanities, disability studies, psychology, peace studies, nursing, social work, and related subject matters. The conference will be hybrid, with in-person and virtual options for attendance.
The award for best paper will be published in America Magazine.

Please email 300-word abstracts or artistic submissions to boisi.center@bc.edu no later than Friday, January 12th, 2024. For other important submission guidelines, please see the full call for submissions here: Digital Humanity Call for Submissions

Jesuit/Ignatian Programs and Resources

Jesuit Relief Services

Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J. founded Jesuit Refugee Service on November 14, 1980. At JRS/USA, we depend on the support of Jesuit institutions and the greater Ignatian-inspired family as we continue the legacy of Fr. Arrupe by accompanying, serving, and advocating for and with refugees.  We invite you to reflect on the life of Fr. Pedro Arrupe and be inspired by his witness as you renew your commitment to forcibly displaced persons. No matter your role in your community, whether it be administrative, educational, social, or pastoral, you can contribute to the JRS mission of accompaniment, service, and advocacy.

Superior General Fr. Arturo Sosa, S.J. has invited the global Ignatian family to recognize November 14th as JRS Day, the anniversary of the founding of JRS. Together, we hope to commemorate Fr. Arrupe’s now famous call for personal and social change to become “People For and With Others” We hope you can join us.

CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) Short-Term Therapy
CAPS continues to offer short-term therapy. The basic steps to getting started in CAPS are outlined below, and the CAPS website has more detailed information on short-term therapy services:

  • First Step: Phone consultation. Students can call 408-554-4501 to schedule a phone consultation, which takes 15-25 minutes. During this call, CAPS staff assess if the therapeutic support a student is seeking fits within the short-term therapy model at CAPS. Collaboratively, the therapist and student will determine next steps.
  • If short-term therapy is recommended, a CAPS therapist will then reach out to the student to schedule a 50 minute intake appointment via the SCU Health Portal.
  • If referral to an off-campus therapist or services is recommended, an appointment with the Cowell Center Clinical Case Manager will be offered to support the referral process.

*Reminder:  There are no limits on the number of therapy sessions and no fees at CAPS, but services are designed to be short-term.
