March 25, 2024 Issue Twenty-Four
"Every Holy Saturday, the Church waits as it were beside the tomb, meditating on Christ's death while awaiting the announcement of his resurrection. Like John, we can take Mary into our homes and ponder with her the last words of Christ. Like her, we can rest in a place between anguish and joy, waiting in quiet hope. We can pray the Divine Office, which parts the veil to show us Christ defeating death and releasing sinners from captivity. The King is not dead; he rests from his work. A new day will come. His Cross is not defeat; it is victory!"

  Day of Giving Heart

Get ready to celebrate the festivities at JST-SCU’s Day of Giving on Wednesday, April 10.

This is the day we encourage our on campus and external community to celebrate JST-SCU and help our school continue to be an incredible space for learning and formation!

How can you participate?

CONTRIBUTE any amount that feels comfortable and show how committed we are to our school. All amounts welcomed! Some suggestions???? Donate $10 instead of a café treat or $25 instead of a meal out.

SPREAD THE WORD!! Maybe your family, friends, or community members would like to join our mission in education and formation by donating.

SAY THANK YOU! Stop by Manresa on the 10th and write a thank you note (or a few) and get crafty by making prayer cards for our donors.

JOIN THE FESTIVITIES! Stop by Campania for donuts before morning class, enjoy hotdogs and cheeseburgers for lunch grilled with love by Kevin and Giles, or have an afternoon snack of chips and guacamole.

Donations from 3/25 - 4/10 will be applied to Day of Giving!

Deep Inculturation: Global Voices on Christian Faith and Indigenous Genius

Monday, March 25 | 12:00 PM CDT (10:00 AM PDT) | RSVP Here
In-Person & Online | Catholic Theological Union, Chicago, IL

Traditionally, inculturation has referred to a strategy employed by Western missionaries to evangelize non-Christian cultures. But what does this look like from the other side, from the perspective of indigenous cultures of the Global South and immigrant-heritage cultures in the interstices of dominant cultures?

Deep Inculturation features original essays by seven leading global theologians with a focus on what this inculturation looks like in particular contexts: Africa, Mexico, Japan, Australia, and Indonesia.

Join us in celebrating the launch of this important collection, edited by CTU's own Dr. Antonio D. Sison, CPPS

The JST-SCU Culture of Care: Keeping One Another Safe and Healthy

Testing

With new variants circulating, infections and hospitalizations are back on the rise, testing plays a critical role. COVID-19 rapid antigen tests are available from the JST Front Desk.

  • Before coming to campus, please test for COVID-19 using an at-home rapid antigen test. If you test positive, please report your test result and observe all isolation protocols and precautions. Do not come to campus if you have tested positive.
  • We strongly recommend you test three to five days after arriving on campus.
  • Please take a test if:
    • you experience symptoms,
    • 3-5 days after you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19,
    • when you return from traveling, or
    • before interacting with vulnerable or high-risk individuals.

Masking: Masks are a simple and effective way to reduce exposure to COVID-19 and other airborne viruses. Although not required in indoor campus locations, masks are highly recommended. In addition, faculty members have the option to require masks in classrooms.

If you are experiencing any illness symptoms we always recommend staying home.  If you are testing negative and feel good enough to come to campus we strongly encourage you to wear a mask.  If exposed to COVID-19, you do not need to quarantine. Test 3-5 days after your last exposure and wear a mask. If you test negative, consider testing again 48 hours later to confirm a negative result; if experiencing symptoms, test again 48 hours after the second negative test.

Isolation:  If you test positive, you must report your positive test result, isolate for at least 5 days and wear a mask through Day 10.   Isolation during your infectious period means you may not go to class, work, lab, or other activities. Please notify your professors, supervisors, and close contacts. Faculty have been encouraged to accommodate students who need to isolate.

If you test positive for the flu, RSV, or if you are ill with another respiratory virus, please stay home to help with your recovery and to limit transmission to others.

COVID-19 Dashboard SCU monitors positive cases, virus levels in wastewater, and workplace exposures on campus. Results are shared on our COVID-19 Dashboard.

For questions or additional information on  COVID-19, please visit Prepared SCU or email us at covid19@scu.edu.

CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) Short-Term Therapy
CAPS continues to offer short-term therapy. The basic steps to getting started in CAPS are outlined below, and the CAPS website has more detailed information on short-term therapy services:

  • First Step: Phone consultation. Students can call 408-554-4501 to schedule a phone consultation, which takes 15-25 minutes. During this call, CAPS staff assess if the therapeutic support a student is seeking fits within the short-term therapy model at CAPS. Collaboratively, the therapist and student will determine next steps.
  • If short-term therapy is recommended, a CAPS therapist will then reach out to the student to schedule a 50 minute intake appointment via the SCU Health Portal.
  • If referral to an off-campus therapist or services is recommended, an appointment with the Cowell Center Clinical Case Manager will be offered to support the referral process.

*Reminder: There are no limits on the number of therapy sessions and no fees at CAPS, but services are designed to be short-term.

Our JST CAPS Liaison, Estrella and Gaurie, will be at JST on February 7th. Come meet them to learn more about this resource!

Campus Safety Services

Campus Safety Services encourages students, faculty, and staff to be an active participant in your personal and community safety.  The following safety reminders will help keep campus safety a priority:

  • Never store valuables in your vehicle
  • Use fortified locks when securing your bicycle or skateboard
  • Be aware of your surroundings and report suspicious activity to Campus Safety and/or the Berkeley Police Department
    • CSS: (408) 554-4441
    • BPD:  911 or from a cell phone call 510-981-5911
  • Prioritize and respect your own mental health; encourage others to do the same
