RE Congress | Student Opportunity
RE Congress is an annual gathering of adults from across the country and around the globe, from February 16 to February 18 at the Anaheim Convention Center. It features exciting workshops, entertainment, Eucharistic Liturgies, exhibits, and multicultural expressions of faith. Within this dynamic event, JST will have a booth in the exhibit hall and is seeking students to assist in staffing it. We offer short shifts, leaving you ample time to explore the event, and your travel and hotel expenses are covered, along with a daily allowance of $50. We Need Soup Cooks | Lenten Community Nights
During Lent we will be having soup suppers for our Tuesday community night meal. We are hoping to have community members sign up to assist with cooking these meals as a way to serve and be engaged with one another. Please find a few friends (students, staff and/or faculty) to come together and make the meal. Student Life will help with shopping and can work with you to come up with the menu. In preparation for his preaching, Paul invites you to participate in communal reflection on the readings for that day. You are welcome to join him in the Manresa Room on either Tuesday or Wednesday, February 6 or 7, at 4:30 p.m., concluding by 5 p.m. If you are not able to meet at either of those times and would like to share your response to the readings, you may contact Paul at pkircher@scu.edu.

Mass of Gathering and Celebration of Lunar New Year Notes:
During the week, we will have a Chinese Catholic community scroll on loan from GTU’s Doug Adams Gallery. The scroll’s calligraphy presents Luke 18: 29-30 “And he said to them, 'Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, who will not get back very much more in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.” We can thank Rowena Chan whose work with the gallery led to its presence at JST.
Similarly, Rowena has helped coordinate our welcoming music ministers of the Chinese choir from St. Leander’s parish. They will serve together with our own choir. A rehearsal will begin at approximately 4 PM on Friday.
Liturgical Ministers are asked to arrive by 5 PM that evening unless an earlier time has been identified for a specific preparation step.

Upcoming Enrichment Opportunities
Scholarships & Bursaries for 2024/25 | The Centre for Catholic Studies (CCS) at Durham University
Applications Due: February 18, 2024
In partnership with the Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ), the CCS is offering several scholarships and awards.
- Up to 5 FCJ Bicentenary Scholarships to full-time or part-time MA and PhD candidates in Catholic Theology or Catholic Studies. Each award includes full tuition fees (at the UK/Home rate) and a maintenance allowance of up to £17,000 per annum (pro rata).
- 1 three-year Louis Lafosse PhD Scholarship (in partnership with the Sisters of the Religious of Christian Education (RCE)) including full tuition fees (at UK/Home rate) and an annual maintenance grant of up to £13,850 per annum (pro rata).
- The CCS is also offering the following tuition fee only awards:
- The Catherine McAuley Postgraduate Scholarship Fund funded by the Institute of Our Lady of Mercy;
- The St Jude Postgraduate Scholarship Fund, funded by an anonymous individual; and
- One Jesuits in Britain Durham Rutilio Grande MA Bursary – one award of £5,000 towards MA tuition fees for 2024/25.

IHEAR Summer Training Program
Applications Due: March 4, 2024
The UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Health offers a summer training program focused on Integrative Health Equity and Applied Research (IHEAR) for students in health professions and behavioral and social sciences doctoral programs. Integrative health equity is an emerging field focused on applying integrative approaches to improving health among underserved and vulnerable populations and testing models to improve access to integrative medicine in inadequately resourced settings.
This NIH-funded program aims to build the capacity and diversity of the integrative medicine research workforce to advance health equity.

"The God of us All: Praying with Black Spirituality" | Jesuit Anti-Racism Solidarity 8 Day Retreat
Interested in attending this summer’s Jesuit Anti-Racism Sodality 8-day Retreat? “The God of us All: Praying with Black Spirituality” is an individually directed retreat that offers participants an opportunity to spend time in song, prayer, and community to experience the transformative nature of the Spirit moving through two deep traditions: Black Spirituality and Ignatian Spirituality. As we look at the world around us, there is violence, fear, and division. Yet, we must never tire of seeking peace. We must be keepers of hope! Laryn Kovalik, MDiv ’25, invites you to “Interfaith Weaving Prayers of Peace." This event is hosted by GTU’s Creatives’ Cove, supported by the Center for the Arts & Religion, and will be held at the Doug Adams Gallery.
No experience is necessary! Bring a quote from your sacred text/tradition that inspires you to seek peace. Materials will be provided, and we also invite you to bring something to add, if possible (yarn or any type of washed fabric like an old t-shirt, scarf, etc.). Once our tapestry is complete, it will travel to different sacred spaces as a symbol of our connectedness and to foster continued prayer. Volunteer Opportunity: Eucharistic Ministers at Oakland Children's Hospital
UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland is looking for Eucharistic Ministers to join our volunteer program. This is a beautiful, needed, and richly rewarding service, bringing spiritual comfort and healing to hospitalized children and their families. We are looking for Eucharistic Ministers who can put in about a year's commitment, at 2-3 hours a week, who are comfortable with children and excited to serve and learn in this way. We are flexible and can work with a student’s schedule. We provide mentoring/shadowing with an experienced Eucharistic Minister as well as orientation, training, and on-site support from the hospital chaplains. Might this be you? Catechesis on Prayer Professional Development Course
|
The Catechesis on Prayer Professional Development Course will consider various forms of prayer and spiritual practices with a focus on both personal and ministerial growth. We will explore the relationship between personality and spiritual growth, the dynamics of the catechumenate via liturgical and mystagogical prayer and catechesis, and other spiritual practices that can support catechists in engaging the next generation of missionary disciples. Participants will also explore various ways to incorporate prayer practices into practical ministerial areas such as retreats, online and in person, and developing other faith sharing opportunities that will be useful for their areas of ministry.

The JST-SCU Culture of Care: Keeping One Another Safe and Healthy
Testing
With new variants circulating, infections and hospitalizations are back on the rise, testing plays a critical role. COVID-19 rapid antigen tests are available from the JST Front Desk.
- Before coming to campus, please test for COVID-19 using an at-home rapid antigen test. If you test positive, please report your test result and observe all isolation protocols and precautions. Do not come to campus if you have tested positive.
- We strongly recommend you test three to five days after arriving on campus.
- Please take a test if:
- you experience symptoms,
- 3-5 days after you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19,
- when you return from traveling, or
- before interacting with vulnerable or high-risk individuals.
Masking: Masks are a simple and effective way to reduce exposure to COVID-19 and other airborne viruses. Although not required in indoor campus locations, masks are highly recommended. In addition, faculty members have the option to require masks in classrooms.
If you are experiencing any illness symptoms we always recommend staying home. If you are testing negative and feel good enough to come to campus we strongly encourage you to wear a mask. If exposed to COVID-19, you do not need to quarantine. Test 3-5 days after your last exposure and wear a mask. If you test negative, consider testing again 48 hours later to confirm a negative result; if experiencing symptoms, test again 48 hours after the second negative test.
Isolation: If you test positive, you must report your positive test result, isolate for at least 5 days and wear a mask through Day 10. Isolation during your infectious period means you may not go to class, work, lab, or other activities. Please notify your professors, supervisors, and close contacts. Faculty have been encouraged to accommodate students who need to isolate.
If you test positive for the flu, RSV, or if you are ill with another respiratory virus, please stay home to help with your recovery and to limit transmission to others.

CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) Short-Term Therapy
CAPS continues to offer short-term therapy. The basic steps to getting started in CAPS are outlined below, and the CAPS website has more detailed information on short-term therapy services:
- First Step: Phone consultation. Students can call 408-554-4501 to schedule a phone consultation, which takes 15-25 minutes. During this call, CAPS staff assess if the therapeutic support a student is seeking fits within the short-term therapy model at CAPS. Collaboratively, the therapist and student will determine next steps.
- If short-term therapy is recommended, a CAPS therapist will then reach out to the student to schedule a 50 minute intake appointment via the SCU Health Portal.
- If referral to an off-campus therapist or services is recommended, an appointment with the Cowell Center Clinical Case Manager will be offered to support the referral process.
*Reminder: There are no limits on the number of therapy sessions and no fees at CAPS, but services are designed to be short-term.

- Always lock your vehicle and residence upon exiting and at night; if you live off-campus, consider investing in a doorbell camera device
- Never store valuables in your vehicle
- Use fortified locks when securing your bicycle or skateboard
- Be aware of your surroundings and report suspicious activity to Campus Safety and/or the Berkeley Police Department
