Reimagining Gospel Literature
|

|
On March 5–6, 2024, the Jesuit School of Theology will host a symposium on “Reimagining Gospel Literature.” This international symposium interrogates the manifold ways that early readers located “Gospel” in the bibliographic landscape of the Roman Mediterranean of the early centuries CE. What made something “Gospel”? What are the limits of this literary phenomenon? How should one read or write a Gospel? How should one organize the expanding constellation of Gospel books? How do Gospels relate to other books, literary categories, and textual practices? How did readers situate Gospel reading in the cultural politics of the Roman Mediterranean? The Catholic Biblical Association, the Mellon Society of Fellows in Critical Bibliography, and the Dean’s Excellence Fund at the Jesuit School of Theology have provided generous support for this symposium. The keynote lecture by Professor Jennifer Knust will take place at 7pm on Tuesday, March 5. The symposium will continue with full-day conversation on Wednesday, March 6. 29th USCCA International Conference: "Our Hope is in Christ"
Proposal Deadline: March 1, 2024
We are calling for you to share your work on promoting friendship, dialogue, and peace between people in China and the USA in your role as intellectuals, as community leaders, members of religious organizations, and of nonprofit agencies dedicated to promoting US-China friendship and dialogue. The work can be broad or fall into anyone of the three main panel topics of:
(a) theology and faith formation in the Chinese context,
(b) clergy leadership and church life in China, and
(c) social services in China by both religious and lay people in both rural and urban communities.
The work also can be about interfaith dialogue or collaboration on any of the above topics. We are particularly interested in projects or programs or research that focus on the Chinese youth.

IHEAR Summer Training Program
Applications Due: March 4, 2024
The UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Health offers a summer training program focused on Integrative Health Equity and Applied Research (IHEAR) for students in health professions and behavioral and social sciences doctoral programs. Integrative health equity is an emerging field focused on applying integrative approaches to improving health among underserved and vulnerable populations and testing models to improve access to integrative medicine in inadequately resourced settings.
This NIH-funded program aims to build the capacity and diversity of the integrative medicine research workforce to advance health equity.

"The God of us All: Praying with Black Spirituality" | Jesuit Anti-Racism Solidarity 8 Day Retreat
Interested in attending this summer’s Jesuit Anti-Racism Sodality 8-day Retreat? “The God of us All: Praying with Black Spirituality” is an individually directed retreat that offers participants an opportunity to spend time in song, prayer, and community to experience the transformative nature of the Spirit moving through two deep traditions: Black Spirituality and Ignatian Spirituality. Workshop on Applied Ignatian SpiritualityMarch 2 and 9 | 9:00-12:00PM | Stanford University Mindfulness, meditation, yoga are excellent spiritual practices proven to improve physical and mental health but there is something more in the Catholic arsenal. In this workshop, we will learn of a variety of Catholic-based approaches for better health and wellness that are receiving more attention and empirical support. The core tenets from Jesuit spirituality we will discuss include seeing God (or the sacred) in all things, attending to the whole person, decision-making using discernment, and ending with the Examen. It is a two day event: March 2 will introduce these tools and the evidence for them while March 9 will focus on the sustainable implementation of the tools in everyday life. Workshop Presenter: Thomas G. Plante, Ph.D., ABPP is the Augustin Cardinal Bea, S.J. University Professor, Professor of Psychology and Religious Studies (by courtesy), and directs the Applied Spirituality Institute at Santa Clara University. He is an Emeritus Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stanford University. He has published 29 books including recently, Living Better with Spirituality Based Strategies that Work. He has been a member of the Catholic Community at Stanford since 1988. Paul Kircher invites you to "Homeward Bound," Cantare Chorale's 25th anniversary concert of favorites from our repertoire over the last 25 years. We present a program of music by American composers, including "Chichester Psalms," a set of psalms in three movements composed in 1965 by Leonard Bernstein for the Chichester Music Festival, which we will perform in Hebrew with adult choir and boy solo. Other highlights include American folk melodies, a Spiritual, a Gospel praise song, and several other selections. The chorus of over 120 singers will be joined by full orchestra. Please join us:

The theme of this exhibit is Art and Social Change - Exploring the Themes of Solito. Art is integral to social change movements and has been used to raise awareness of issues, to protest injustice, or to share a vision for a better future. We invite you to submit your own original art – whether a visual piece or written work – and are especially interested in works that connect social change to themes of the book such as borders, migration, family, and identity.
All students, faculty, staff, and community members are encouraged to submit works for consideration!

The JST-SCU Culture of Care: Keeping One Another Safe and Healthy
Testing
With new variants circulating, infections and hospitalizations are back on the rise, testing plays a critical role. COVID-19 rapid antigen tests are available from the JST Front Desk.
- Before coming to campus, please test for COVID-19 using an at-home rapid antigen test. If you test positive, please report your test result and observe all isolation protocols and precautions. Do not come to campus if you have tested positive.
- We strongly recommend you test three to five days after arriving on campus.
- Please take a test if:
- you experience symptoms,
- 3-5 days after you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19,
- when you return from traveling, or
- before interacting with vulnerable or high-risk individuals.
Masking: Masks are a simple and effective way to reduce exposure to COVID-19 and other airborne viruses. Although not required in indoor campus locations, masks are highly recommended. In addition, faculty members have the option to require masks in classrooms.
If you are experiencing any illness symptoms we always recommend staying home. If you are testing negative and feel good enough to come to campus we strongly encourage you to wear a mask. If exposed to COVID-19, you do not need to quarantine. Test 3-5 days after your last exposure and wear a mask. If you test negative, consider testing again 48 hours later to confirm a negative result; if experiencing symptoms, test again 48 hours after the second negative test.
Isolation: If you test positive, you must report your positive test result, isolate for at least 5 days and wear a mask through Day 10. Isolation during your infectious period means you may not go to class, work, lab, or other activities. Please notify your professors, supervisors, and close contacts. Faculty have been encouraged to accommodate students who need to isolate.
If you test positive for the flu, RSV, or if you are ill with another respiratory virus, please stay home to help with your recovery and to limit transmission to others.

CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) Short-Term Therapy
CAPS continues to offer short-term therapy. The basic steps to getting started in CAPS are outlined below, and the CAPS website has more detailed information on short-term therapy services:
- First Step: Phone consultation. Students can call 408-554-4501 to schedule a phone consultation, which takes 15-25 minutes. During this call, CAPS staff assess if the therapeutic support a student is seeking fits within the short-term therapy model at CAPS. Collaboratively, the therapist and student will determine next steps.
- If short-term therapy is recommended, a CAPS therapist will then reach out to the student to schedule a 50 minute intake appointment via the SCU Health Portal.
- If referral to an off-campus therapist or services is recommended, an appointment with the Cowell Center Clinical Case Manager will be offered to support the referral process.
*Reminder: There are no limits on the number of therapy sessions and no fees at CAPS, but services are designed to be short-term.
