A Theological Project of the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University to promote the practice of synodality and the emergence of a synodal church in the US, this two-day conference will make space for imagining the role of women in the future of the global Church. With keynotes and interactive break-out sessions, the event provides an opportunity for listening, dialogue, and building synodal bridges.

Upcoming Community Nights 5:15 PM Liturgy | 6:00 PM Meal | 6:30 PM Program "Thomas Merton in California: The Redwoods Conferences and Letters" with Dr. David Odorisio | April 30 In May and October of 1968, Trappist monk and spiritual author, Thomas Merton, offered two extended conferences at Our Lady of the Redwoods Abbey. Comprising over twenty-six hours of previously unpublished material, Merton’s California conferences cover a variety of topics. This presentation contextualizes Merton’s California conferences within the wider scope of his thought, with particular attention to patristic and medieval theological anthropology, and Merton’s notion of the true and the false self. Merton offers a unique approach to inter-religious praxis that, while built upon a comparative approach to mystical traditions, aims toward the transformation of the self in a way that is remarkably integrated with traditional patristic and medieval Cistercian notions of divinization.

The Community Read Committee is accepting submissions of creative works inspired by Javier Zamora’s Solito.

The theme of this exhibit is Art and Social Change - Exploring the Themes of Solito. Art is integral to social change movements and has been used to raise awareness of issues, to protest injustice, or to share a vision for a better future. We invite you to submit your own original art – whether a visual piece or written work – and are especially interested in works that connect social change to themes of the book such as borders, migration, family, and identity.

All students, faculty, staff, and community members are encouraged to submit works for consideration!

The Afterlife of Shtetl at The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life

Dr. Natalia Romik, curator, architect and 2022 Dan David Prize winner, returns to the Magnes to present an exclusive preview of her vibrant new exhibition soon to premier at the POLIN Museum, in Warsaw. The exhibition, titled (post)JEWISH… The Shtetl Opatów Through the Eyes of Mayer Kirshenblatt, juxtaposes the shtetl as recalled in detail by memory artist Mayer Kirshenblatt (1934–2009) with the “post-war” town it became during and after the Holocaust. Before the Holocaust, there were thousands of shtetlekh, towns where Jews made up a significant proportion of the population or even a majority, across Eastern Europe. Today, their cemeteries, synagogues, mikves, and other communal buildings may still stand, silent witnesses to once-vibrant Jewish communities, but not a single Jew remains. How did the shtetl become a “post-Jewish” town?
