Non-Graduating Students | JST Needs Your Help!
JST-SCU Give Back Days

As Dean Bator mentioned during our Fall Orientation, a time will come when JST will need your help in service to our community. That time is now!

In the next few weeks, we have a great need for extra help to support and celebrate our graduating students and departing faculty/staff.

To create community celebrations such as Commencement Weekend,  your volunteer support is vital.  We are calling this volunteer opportunity your GIVE BACK DAYS.  We encourage you to give back this spring!

Please sign up on the Give Back Days Sign-Up form for one, or even two, volunteer shifts.

If you cannot help during the shifts listed but want to contribute in some other way please email Jenny. There is a lot to do and we will find a special way for you to contribute.

Thank you for stepping up to give back to JST!

Upcoming Community Nights

5:15 PM Liturgy | 6:00 PM Meal | 6:30 PM Program

JST Community Night | April 23

"Thomas Merton in California: The Redwoods Conferences and Letters" with Dr. David Odorisio | April 30

In May and October of 1968, Trappist monk and spiritual author, Thomas Merton, offered two extended conferences at Our Lady of the Redwoods Abbey. Comprising over twenty-six hours of previously unpublished material, Merton’s California conferences cover a variety of topics. This presentation contextualizes Merton’s California conferences within the wider scope of his thought, with particular attention to patristic and medieval theological anthropology, and Merton’s notion of the true and the false self. Merton offers a unique approach to inter-religious praxis that, while built upon a comparative approach to mystical traditions, aims toward the transformation of the self in a way that is remarkably integrated with traditional patristic and medieval Cistercian notions of divinization.

Youth Making a Change in Times of Climate Change: A Conversation with Climate Action Activists

Thursday, April 18 | 7:00-8:30 PM

Music Recital Hall (SCU South Campus) & Zoom | More Information

Bay Area environmental justice youth activists will be brought together to reflect and discuss their organizing, climate actions, and radical hopes for change. By featuring some scenes from “Fruits of Labor” (2021), a documentary highlighting the story of a young girl agricultural worker and high school student in Watsonville, CA, the event will invite the audience to reflect on the complexities of coming of age in a time of climate change, environmental injustices, and economic inequities that intersect with race, gender, age, and immigrant status. Youth experiences featured in the film, along with the reflections of youth activists who will join us as panelists will be complemented by insights from the documentary director, Emily Cohen Ibañez. The event will invite the SCU community to imagine possibilities for solidarity in action as we work toward climate actions that can restore sustainability and global environmental thriving. I look forward to facilitating this dialogue, and creating a moment for learning in and with community.

The JST-SCU Culture of Care: Keeping One Another Safe and Healthy

Testing

With new variants circulating, infections and hospitalizations are back on the rise, testing plays a critical role. COVID-19 rapid antigen tests are available from the JST Front Desk.

  • Before coming to campus, please test for COVID-19 using an at-home rapid antigen test. If you test positive, please report your test result and observe all isolation protocols and precautions. Do not come to campus if you have tested positive.
  • We strongly recommend you test three to five days after arriving on campus.
  • Please take a test if:
    • you experience symptoms,
    • 3-5 days after you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19,
    • when you return from traveling, or
    • before interacting with vulnerable or high-risk individuals.

Masking: Masks are a simple and effective way to reduce exposure to COVID-19 and other airborne viruses. Although not required in indoor campus locations, masks are highly recommended. In addition, faculty members have the option to require masks in classrooms.

If you are experiencing any illness symptoms we always recommend staying home.  If you are testing negative and feel good enough to come to campus we strongly encourage you to wear a mask.  If exposed to COVID-19, you do not need to quarantine. Test 3-5 days after your last exposure and wear a mask. If you test negative, consider testing again 48 hours later to confirm a negative result; if experiencing symptoms, test again 48 hours after the second negative test.

Isolation:  If you test positive, you must report your positive test result, isolate for at least 5 days and wear a mask through Day 10.   Isolation during your infectious period means you may not go to class, work, lab, or other activities. Please notify your professors, supervisors, and close contacts. Faculty have been encouraged to accommodate students who need to isolate.

If you test positive for the flu, RSV, or if you are ill with another respiratory virus, please stay home to help with your recovery and to limit transmission to others.

COVID-19 Dashboard SCU monitors positive cases, virus levels in wastewater, and workplace exposures on campus. Results are shared on our COVID-19 Dashboard.

For questions or additional information on  COVID-19, please visit Prepared SCU or email us at covid19@scu.edu.

CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) Short-Term Therapy
CAPS continues to offer short-term therapy. The basic steps to getting started in CAPS are outlined below, and the CAPS website has more detailed information on short-term therapy services:

  • First Step: Phone consultation. Students can call 408-554-4501 to schedule a phone consultation, which takes 15-25 minutes. During this call, CAPS staff assess if the therapeutic support a student is seeking fits within the short-term therapy model at CAPS. Collaboratively, the therapist and student will determine next steps.
  • If short-term therapy is recommended, a CAPS therapist will then reach out to the student to schedule a 50 minute intake appointment via the SCU Health Portal.
  • If referral to an off-campus therapist or services is recommended, an appointment with the Cowell Center Clinical Case Manager will be offered to support the referral process.

*Reminder: There are no limits on the number of therapy sessions and no fees at CAPS, but services are designed to be short-term.

Our JST CAPS Liaison, Estrella and Gaurie, will be at JST on February 7th. Come meet them to learn more about this resource!

Campus Safety Services

Campus Safety Services encourages students, faculty, and staff to be an active participant in your personal and community safety.  The following safety reminders will help keep campus safety a priority:

  • Never store valuables in your vehicle
  • Use fortified locks when securing your bicycle or skateboard
  • Be aware of your surroundings and report suspicious activity to Campus Safety and/or the Berkeley Police Department
    • CSS: (408) 554-4441
    • BPD:  911 or from a cell phone call 510-981-5911
  • Prioritize and respect your own mental health; encourage others to do the same
