Letter from Assistant Dean of Students, Paul Kircher

Dear JST Community,

Welcome to this issue of the Magis newsletter.

This has been a difficult week for our community and indeed for the entire world. As a school community, we are all endeavoring to continue in our shared work of education and formation while discovering and adapting to new ways of connecting with each other. It is our hope that the Magis newsletter can serve as a resource where we can post and share ideas and suggestions, reflections, and opportunities for coming together while observing shelter in place directives. We encourage you to reach out to the JST community by sending a photo, a prayer, a poem, a short inspiring story, an invitation, or a resource you have found that could help someone. The Spirit is with us. We invite you to listen and discern what you can do and make an offering if the Spirit moves you to do so.  Please send your contribution to Mary Beth Lamb at melamb@scu.edu by each Wednesday at noon.

In the midst of all the challenges of this week, the first day of Spring came upon us on Thursday. Much needed rains came to California, with more in the forecast. Spring Break offers time for rest and renewal this coming week. In the midst of our Lenten journey together, may we find time to pause, to refrain from the computer or the news cycle, and notice God’s loving presence within and around us, in the voice of a friend on the telephone, in the blossoms on the trees, in a moment of rest or quiet prayer.

In the peace of Christ,

Paul

A word from Virgil Michel, OSB, early 20th century leader of liturgical reform: "A Christian Lent can never be entirely sad. With the fourth Sunday of Lent the pent-up spiritual joy in the true member of Christ bursts forth in anticipation of the Easter."

A Faith Response to the Coronavirus

Here is a poem Submitted by George Griener, recommended by alumnus John Konicek.

Nove marzo duemilaventi

I’m telling you this
we needed to stop.
We knew. We all felt it
that it was too furious,
our frenzy. Being inside of things.
Outside of ourselves.
Squeeze every hour – make it yield.

We needed to stop
and we couldn’t.
We needed to do it together.
Slow down the race.
But we couldn’t.
There was no human force
that could hold us back....
